The infamous traffic congestion of Bengaluru still finds itself a topic of discussion. It was ranked the world’s third slowest city for traffic flow, according to the 2024 TomTom Traffic Index report, which measures the conditions of major cities around the globe. This means that, besides Barranquilla and Kolkata, it emerged as the slowest city in the traffic flow rankings.
Bengaluru’s Traffic Times
The TomTom report now indicates that on average, traveling 10 kilometers in Bengaluru takes 30 minutes and 10 seconds. This is 50 seconds faster than in 2023. In Barranquilla, the average for the same distance is 36 minutes and 6 seconds, and in Kolkata, the average is 34 minutes and 33 seconds.
Domestic Traffic Ranking
Domestically, Kolkata is the most congested city followed by Bengaluru. In 2023, for the average coverage of 10 kilometers from 29 minutes and 9 seconds in 2022, Bengaluru took almost 28 minutes and 10 seconds. Bengaluru was India’s slowest average speed at 18 km/h in 2022.
Global Traffic Woes
On a global scale, London remains at the top position in terms of the most congested city with an average speed of 14 km/h. Other cities are Dublin (16 km/h), Milan (17 km/h), Lima (17 km/h), and Toronto (18 km/h) with speeds lower than that of Bengaluru, thus giving an emphasis on the problem globally.
Private vehicles have been adding to Bengaluru’s traffic problems, which had surpassed New Delhi in car ownership a few years ago. Currently, the city has about 2.5 million private cars, with almost 2,000 new vehicle registrations every day, which further puts pressure on the already strained infrastructure of the city.
