U.S. President Joe Biden will have a farewell speech on January 15 at 8 p.m. ET from the Oval Office after announcing his intent to step out of the presidential position ahead of January 20 and the inauguration date for President-elect Donald Trump. In a similar spirit as when he delivered an exit message from the Resolute desk for having withdrawn from running for election in 2024, Mr. Biden announced that he, “revere this office, but I love my country more.

During his presidency to date, Biden has addressed the public few times from the Oval Office; his speeches included those after the October 7 attack and its subsequent Israel-Hamas war and the one-year mark of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Before the valedictory speech, Biden will speak at the State Department on January 13, where he will outline his foreign policy legacy and America’s enhanced position in the world. A senior administration official said that Biden’s administration successfully addressed big challenges that included Afghanistan, China, and the pandemic and will depart the next administration with a “stronger hand than he inherited.”
