A tragic aircraft crash in Malindi County, Kenya, on Friday claimed the lives of three people on the ground, according to local police authorities. Sub-County Police Commander Lucky Joski Mudavadi confirmed that the accident occurred in Kwachocha town along the Malindi-Mombasa highway, just adjacent to Malindi Airport.
Among the victims was a motorcycle taxi operator who died after the plane ignited upon impact. A motorcyclist and their female passenger also lost their lives when debris from the aircraft’s wings and tail struck them during the crash.
The aircraft, occupied by a pilot and two student trainees, crash-landed near a residential area. All three occupants evacuated the plane before impact and sustained injuries, receiving medical attention shortly after the incident.
Investigation Launched of Crash
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the crash. The accident site is near Malindi Airport, which has been a focal point of ongoing legal disputes over its expansion and unresolved land compensation claims.
Local county assembly representative Rashid Odhiambo urged authorities to prioritize safety measures around the airport. “Airport management should ensure safety not just within the facility but also in surrounding areas,” Odhiambo stated while addressing the press.
The incident has drawn attention to the need for stricter safety protocols, particularly in areas adjoining high-risk zones like airports.
