Princess Kate Middleton made her return to public life on Friday by hosting her annual Christmas carol service at Westminster Abbey, marking her first major event after battling cancer. The Princess of Wales had spent much of the past year away from the spotlight due to her diagnosis. She was accompanied by her husband, Prince William, and their children—Princes George and Louis, and Princess Charlotte. Kate wore a red coat with a black bow and black boots for the occasion.

The hour-long service, attended by over 1,000 guests, royals, and community members, focused on themes of love and empathy. Among the attendees were survivors of a tragic knife attack at a UK dance school in July, which resulted in three children’s deaths and left nine others injured. During the service, Kate sat with her family and was seen guiding young Prince Louis during a candlelight exchange.
Titled “Royal Carols: Together at Christmas,” the service will be aired on Christmas Eve in the UK. This year’s service highlights individuals from across the UK who have shown kindness and empathy in their communities, according to Kensington Palace.
Kate’s return to the public eye is a significant moment in her recovery following her cancer diagnosis in March. After undergoing abdominal surgery in January, she learned of her cancer during follow-up tests. The type of cancer and treatment details have not been disclosed. In September, Kate shared a video message announcing the completion of her chemotherapy and her focus on staying “cancer-free” as she resumed her royal duties. Since then, she has slowly increased her public appearances, including visiting the site of the July knife attack and meeting Qatar’s leader in the UK.
The Christmas carol service, which Kate launched in 2021, has become a royal holiday tradition. In 2021, she also played the piano at the service, performing “For Those Who Can’t Be Here” with Tom Walker.
