Political leaders and social activists gathered at the Islamabad Press Club on Tuesday to demand the safe release of journalist and writer Ahmed Farhad Shah, who was reportedly “forcibly abducted.” The protesters voiced their concerns and announced plans for a major demonstration in Pakistan-Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) to advocate for the release of Shah and other political prisoners.
One protestor declared, “We have never begged for our rights and never will. Everything we have achieved has been through struggle and protest. We protested peacefully in PoJK for our rights and achieved what we deserved. The same effort will go towards freeing Ahmed Farhad and other political prisoners. We will organize another protest for Farhad to show our strength.”
The protestors expressed frustration with the long-standing oppression in Pakistan, highlighting that the country has been divided between “the oppressor” and “the oppressed” for over 70 years. They criticized top officials for neglecting essential issues such as electricity, wheat, flour, education, and infrastructure, despite repeated appeals.
The case of Ahmed Farhad’s abduction has gained significant attention, prompting the Islamabad High Court (IHC) to demand a report from the defence secretary regarding the alleged involvement of state intelligence agencies. Shah was reportedly taken from his home shortly after a four-day protest in Muzafarabad concluded. His wife filed a petition in the IHC on the same day, seeking his safe return and accountability for those responsible.
Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani, who conducted the initial hearing, instructed Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jameel Zafar to ensure Shah’s recovery, warning of consequences if the defence secretary is not summoned. Justice Kayani criticized the lack of progress in missing persons cases, stating, “Shamefully, the whole nation knows who is doing what, including me, but we have closed our eyes.”
The IHC has summoned high-ranking federal officials, including the interior and defence secretaries, to appear before the court. The court questioned whether intelligence agencies or the rule of law would govern the country. Justice Kayani demanded that the sector commander of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) provide a statement and report on the case, questioning the commander’s authority and stressing the necessity for him to stay within his limits.
The IHC panel indicated that, if necessary, it would also summon the prime minister and federal cabinet members to ensure accountability and adherence to the rule of law in resolving this and similar cases.
