In a groundbreaking move, Kishtwar became the first district in Jammu and Kashmir to integrate a high-tech AI-based facial detection system, enhancing security measures to counter potential terrorist and criminal activities. The Jammu and Kashmir Police have successfully introduced an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven facial recognition system, developed by a Chennai-based firm, to swiftly identify and apprehend militants, overground workers (OGWs), and other criminals.
Khalil Poswal, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kishtwar, while speaking to The Daily Guardian, said, “Under Operation Falcon eye, we have started an AI-based facial detection system in district Kishtwar. It’s a pre-incident prevention step that can help us foil any incident.” The AI-driven system can store up to 5000 photographs and identify multiple faces, even when individuals are wearing masks. Using deep learning, it analyzes and compares facial features in real-time against an extensive database of known individuals.
Poswal emphasized the system’s accuracy in matching faces, providing crucial information for identifying and tracking suspects, including active terrorists. The deployment of this technology is anticipated to significantly aid law enforcement in the swift identification of individuals with anti-national affiliations. Poswal revealed plans to replicate the system at other entry points, such as Margon Top and Sinthan Top, along with other entries and exit points in the district. The technology is set to play a pivotal role in preventing the movement of militants and their sympathizers in these mountainous areas that have faced the brunt of terrorism.Beyond local applications, there are plans to integrate the system with the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) portal at the national level. Additionally, a mobile app is in development, enabling police officials to receive real-time information about the presence or movement of suspects.
Law enforcement authorities have already populated the system with photographs and details of terrorists, OGWs, and other criminals, enabling automatic matching with faces captured in CCTV footage. The AI-based facial recognition system has undergone successful trials in Kishtwar, with officials reporting positive outcomes. Its implementation marks a pivotal step in ensuring public safety and effectively combating crime in the region. Jammu and Kashmir’s embrace of this cutting-edge technology signifies a commitment to smart, technology-driven law enforcement, contributing significantly to the broader framework of intelligent and proactive policing. The move is expected to create a safer and more secure environment, aligning with the principles of innovation and public safety.
