Mohali is anticipated to establish its inaugural street vending locations by December 15. In a separate incident, the Panchkula police have taken legal action against the wife and son of a 64-year-old man, Bahadur Singh, accusing them of assaulting him on multiple occasions. Bahadur Singh, residing in Pinjore, claimed harassment and has allegedly disowned both family members despite cohabitation. He recorded an attack by his wife and son a few weeks ago, leading to the destruction of his mobile phone. A case has been filed against them under IPC sections 323, 427, and 506. Additionally, the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) assigned four locations to Mohali Municipal Corporation (MC) for accommodating street vendors in various sectors, including Sector 77 and Sector 56, with the allocation taking place in November of the previous year.
The Mohali Municipal Corporation (MC) discovered that technical challenges prevented the development of both allocated sites in Sector 77. Consequently, only sites in Sector 56 and Sector 78 were developed by the MC engineering department. These two sites are scheduled to be inaugurated by the Mohali MLA in the next 10 days. To address the issue, the MC plans to acquire two additional sites from GMADA in exchange for the problematic Sector 77 locations. Commissioner of MC, Navjot Kaur, expressed the goal of providing more space for street vendors, ensuring residents experience an encroachment-free city. Currently, Mohali has a total of 993 registered vendors with street vending licenses, and the city operates over 2,200 street vendors, as per sources.
The Mohali Municipal Corporation (MC) is actively preparing to register all street vendors, facilitating their accommodation at designated vending sites. Vendors possessing street vending licenses will be allowed to use these sites by paying a monthly fee of 1,000 to the MC. Notably, there won’t be designated vending slots inside the sites, preventing vendors from leaving their retries or articles at fixed locations. Some vendors in the city possess stationary vending licenses issued long ago, but the MC has ceased issuing new stationary vending licenses. Consequently, vendors are now restricted to mobile vending and cannot station themselves at a fixed spot. Additionally, the MC, along with the police, has undertaken the removal of encroachments in Phase 11.
In a recent development, senior officials from the Mohali Municipal Corporation (MC), including MC Joint Commissioner Kiran Sharma and Assistant Commissioner Manjit Singh Sidhu, accompanied by the enforcement team, took action to clear street vendors operating in a no-vending zone. This initiative carried out in collaboration with the Phase 11 police, involved removing encroachments along the road from Phase 11 to Phase 8, which has been designated as a no-vending zone.
