Six international migrants, including individuals from India and Pakistan, tragically lost their lives in a violent incident involving Mexican soldiers near the Guatemala border. The confrontation occurred late Tuesday in the southern state of Chiapas, close to the town of Huixtla, as the truck carrying the migrants approached a military position.

Soldiers Open Fire After Alleged Gunshots

According to the Mexican Defence Department, the soldiers opened fire after reportedly hearing gunshots as the truck neared their checkpoint. The vehicle was carrying migrants from various countries, including Egypt, Nepal, Cuba, India, and Pakistan.

After the shooting, soldiers inspected the truck and found four migrants dead on the scene, with twelve others seriously injured. Two of the wounded later died from their injuries, increasing the death toll to six. The condition of the remaining ten injured individuals has not yet been disclosed.

Unclear Cause of Deaths and Investigation Initiated

Local prosecutors confirmed that all six deceased migrants died from gunshot wounds, but it is still unclear whether the injuries were caused by army fire or if any weapons were found inside the truck. A total of 33 migrants were aboard the vehicle, with 17 left unharmed.

The two soldiers involved in the shooting have been relieved of duty while an investigation is conducted. In Mexico, incidents involving civilians can result in civilian prosecution, but military personnel may also face trials in military courts.

Migrant Crisis in Mexico

This incident highlights the ongoing migrant crisis in Mexico, where thousands of individuals from various countries attempt to cross the southern border in search of better opportunities or safety. Chiapas, in particular, has been a hotspot for migrant activity, given its proximity to the Guatemala border.

As the investigation continues, authorities are faced with pressing questions about the circumstances that led to this tragic loss of life.
