The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) recently unveiled alarming statistics, highlighting the presence of 3,042 fraudulent agents who have been duping individuals with false promises of overseas employment. These agents have been listed on the ‘eMigrate’ portal, a resource designed to protect potential migrants from scams. While Punjab and Gujarat are often recognized for their large numbers of youth aspiring to work abroad, a new report reveals that Andhra Pradesh has outpaced them, becoming the state with the highest concentration of fraudulent agents.
Andhra Pradesh has emerged as the state with the most significant number of fraudulent agents, with 498 names identified on the eMigrate portal. Following closely is Uttar Pradesh, which accounts for 418 of the total fraudulent agents listed. These figures, which are current up to June 2024, were compiled based on complaints from affected migrants or their families. These complaints have spurred investigations by state police forces, Indian Missions, and Foreign Situation Centres.
The MEA’s report also sheds light on the widespread nature of this issue, with other states like Tamil Nadu (372), Maharashtra (337), and Delhi (299) also reporting a high number of fraudulent agents. Surprisingly, traditional migration hubs like Punjab and Gujarat reported fewer fake agents, with 209 and 59 respectively.
In a bid to prevent further exploitation, the MEA regularly updates the list of fraudulent agents on the eMigrate portal. As of June 2024, the names of 3,042 fake agents have been made public. Additionally, the ministry provides several resources for those seeking employment or education abroad, including the MADAD, CPGAMS, and eMigrate portals. A dedicated helpline is also available for migrants to register complaints.
The data reflects a pressing need for greater vigilance and awareness among those seeking opportunities abroad. By staying informed and using official channels, individuals can protect themselves from falling victim to these fraudulent schemes.
