As the 20th ASEAN-India Summit began in Jakarta, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other ASEAN leaders posed for a family photo. On Thursday, Indonesian President Joko Widodo welcomed PM Modi to the ASEAN-India Summit at the Jakarta Convention Center. PM Modi spoke at the ASEAN-India Summit as well. He has stated that co-chairing the summit was an “honor” for him.
In the address at the Summit in Indonesia, PM Modi congratulated Indonesian President Joko Widodo for organising the Summit and said, “Our partnership has reached the fourth decade. It is an honour for me to co-chair this Summit. I want to congratulate Indonesian President Joko Widodo for organising this Summit…”
The Prime Minister’s visit to Indonesia comes ahead of the G20 Summit to be held in New Delhi on September 9-10 under India’s Presidency this year.
Indonesia is a member of the G20 “troika” because it presided over the organization last year. Alongside the ASEAN-India summit, PM Modi will attend the 18th East Asia Summit (EAS). PM Modi was given a formal welcome at Jakarta International Airport earlier today upon his arrival. I. Gusti Ayu Bintang Darmawati, Minister for Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection, welcomed him. The Indian community greeted the prime minister as he arrived at his hotel. He greeted the Indian diaspora residents who could be seen chanting “Vande Mataram” and “Modi Modi.” The prime minister was also observed practicing a local instrument.
