PARIS – Turkish Olympic shooting silver medallist Yusuf Dikec has captured the internet’s attention, not just for his skill but also for his cool demeanor during competitions. On August 1, Dikec commented on his newfound fame, which skyrocketed after he and his partner Sevval Ilayda Tarhan secured silver for Turkey in the mixed team 10m air pistol event on July 30.

A Style That Stands Out

Dikec’s relaxed posture during the competition turned heads as much as his performance. Sporting standard glasses, a team T-shirt, and his left hand casually tucked in his pocket, he eschewed the specialized gear typically used by competitors in this precise sport. Unlike others, he didn’t use headphones, special lenses, or a hat.

His unique style quickly made him a viral sensation. The French embassy in Turkey celebrated his win with a post on X, humorously encouraging people to “Be cool like Yusuf Dikec.” Social media buzzed with comparisons to James Bond, with some memes even adding a cigarette to his mouth to emphasize his laid-back attitude.

A Rare Shooting Technique

In an interview with Turkish channel TGRT Haber, Dikec explained his rare shooting technique. Unlike most athletes who close one eye or use special lenses, Dikec shoots with both eyes open, surprising even the referees.

My shooting technique is one of the rare shooting techniques in the world. I shoot with both eyes open. Even the referees are surprised by this,” he said.

Dikec attributed his success to hard work and preparation, saying, “This year we prepared a lot and worked a lot… this success belongs to all of Turkey.” He also noted, “Success doesn’t come with your hands in your pockets.”

Equal Attention for His Partner

While Dikec’s style captured most of the attention, social media users also highlighted his partner Tarhan’s equally casual approach, noting that she adopted a similar hand-in-pocket stance, though she wore headphones and a visor.

Turkey’s Sports Minister Osman Askin Bak congratulated Dikec on social media, sharing a photo of himself mimicking Dikec’s now “legendary pose.”

On July 31, Dikec and Tarhan celebrated their victory at the Champions Park at the Trocadero complex in Paris, proudly displaying the Turkish flag and their medals.

This remarkable duo has shown that confidence and unique techniques can make waves just as much as medals do.
