Australia has justified a A$2.5 billion ($1.62 billion) deal to send hundreds of non-citizens to the Pacific island country of Nauru for the next 30 years, a proposal which has been criticized by human rights groups.
What is the Australia-Nauru Deportation Deal?
It was in September 2025 that Australia's centre-left Labor government agreed with Nauru to resettle those rejected refugee visas on the grounds of having criminal records. Critics have termed it as Australia "dumping" refugees in tiny island countries, again sparking controversy about offshore resettlement policies.
Nauru would get under the 30-year contract:
A$400 million initially to set up an endowment for the resettlement program
A$70 million per annum for 30 years
The Nauru government can decide which non-citizens it will take in. Australia can recover money if the program fails.
Tony Burke Defends Nauru's Facilities
Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke stated that the 30-year visas for deportees would be able to work in Nauru, a small country with 12,000 people and an area of 21 square kilometers (8 square miles).
"
I've gone and personally visited the accommodation and visited the health facilities there and the standard there is good," Burke said in an interview with Australian Broadcasting Corp television.He also said the island's health facilities are "way beyond" what critics have made them out to be.
Human Rights Concerns Over Deportations
Human Rights Watch has expressed concerns about the conditions of asylum seekers in Nauru, with reports of deaths due to medical neglect and suicide.
Local traders and community workers have offered divergent views regarding their willingness to accept people with criminal backgrounds. In the meantime, a 2025 Brigham Young University report established that Pacific island countries' healthcare systems, including Nauru, lag perennially behind World Health Organization standards.
Economic Impact on Nauru
Nauru already accommodates an Australian-sponsored asylum seeker processing centre, which added A$200 million an estimated two-thirds of the nation's income in the previous year. The fresh resettlement agreement brings in massive money into the island economy but also brings in questions of social integration and sustainability of deportees.
