US President Donald Trump has withdrawn Secret Service protection for former Vice President Kamala Harris. The move takes effect on September 1, according to a letter reviewed by CNN. Harris, who ran against Trump in the 2024 presidential election, had received extended protection from then-President Joe Biden. Biden had approved an extra year of security, until January 2026, before leaving office.
Former vice presidents usually receive only six months of protection after leaving office. Harris was given a longer period, but Trump has now decided to cut it short.
The White House confirmed the decision in writing. The letter stated, “You are hereby authorized to discontinue any security-related procedures previously authorized by Executive Memorandum, beyond those required by law, for the following individual, effective September 1, 2025: Former Vice President Kamala D. Harris.”

This means Harris will no longer have government-provided protection beyond what the law requires.
Kirsten Allen, a senior adviser to Harris, shared the former vice president’s response. She said Harris expressed gratitude to the agency. "The vice president is grateful to the United States Secret Service for their professionalism, dedication, and unwavering commitment to safety," Allen said, according to Reuters.
Harris herself has not commented directly on the removal of protection.
The decision comes just weeks before Harris begins a major book tour. Her memoir, 107 Days, will be released on September 23. The book reflects on her short presidential campaign after Biden withdrew from the 2024 race.
The tour will take Harris across several cities, where she will interact with readers and discuss her political journey. The timing of the security cut raises questions about her safety during large public events.
Trump defeated Harris in the 2024 election, so this decision may spark political debate. Biden stepped aside from the race, and Harris became the Democratic nominee, but Trump won the presidency.
Critics may view the withdrawal of her security as politically motivated. Supporters of the decision could argue that Harris is receiving treatment in line with standard rules for former vice presidents.
For now, Harris will move forward with her memoir launch and public appearances without the full protection she has had for years.
