Miss Universe 2025 opened to a storm of controversy as Miss Mexico, Fatima Bosch, clashed with Thai pageant director Nawat Itsaragrisil in a heated exchange on stage during the live-streamed sash ceremony held in Thailand, leaving viewers all over the world appalled.

It was quickly ramped up to a full-scale clash that saw many contestants including the reigning Miss Universe, walk out in protest.

What is the Incident That Ignited the Fire

Tensions arose when Nawat Itsaragrisil, the Vice President for Asia and Oceania at MUO and the head of Miss Grand International, confronted Bosch over her failure to show up for a sponsor photo-shoot earlier that day.

In front of cameras, he asked her to stand and explain herself. After Bosch defended her absence, Nawat called her “dumb,” which visibly disconcerted the participants. Minutes later, he summoned security and then kicked Bosch out of the event, citing, She’s talking too much.

Miss Mexico Walkout in Solidarity

After the public spat, Miss Mexico stormed out of the hall, which was followed by several other contestants, including Miss Universe 2024 Victoria Kjær Theilvig, alongside representatives from Armenia, Canada, Palestine, the Bahamas, Cape Verde, Spain, Belize, Bolivia and Bulgaria.

The grand exit sent ripples online with footage of the incident spreading across the web and spurring discussions of respect, professionalism and gender equality within global pageantry.

Miss Mexico Speaks Out

Addressing reporters afterward, Bosch expressed both disappointment and dignity. “I love Thailand and I have deep respect for everyone here,” she said, “but what happened was disrespectful. No woman deserves to be insulted publicly.”

Her calm yet firm response earned support from contestants and fans alike. The reigning Miss Universe praised Bosch for “standing up for self-respect and integrity.”

Mexico Backs Its Delegate

The Miss Universe Mexico organization put out a stern statement against the incident, saying that no woman, on any stage, should be humiliated. It praised Bosch's poise, calling her "a true reflection of Mexican strength and grace." The statement quickly went viral, amplifying calls for accountability from pageant organizers.

Miss Universe Organization Responds

Following the backlash, the Miss Universe Organization issued a statement to reiterate its commitment to inclusivity, diversity and respect. While it did not mention Nawat Itsaragrisil directly, it iterated that all upcoming events will proceed as planned.

The November 21 pageant, to be held in Thailand, has now come under increased scrutiny not for crowns or gowns but for how it treats women on its global stage.
