US Vice President JD Vance about his Hindu wife, Usha Vance, have set off a storm of conversation about faith, marriage and belief in modern America. At a Turning Point USA event at the University of Mississippi, Vance said he hopes his wife will one day be moved to embrace Christianity though he underscored that it's up to her to decide.

"God says everybody has free will, so that doesn't cause a problem for me," he explained. Vance was answering a question by an attendee of Indian origin about how the couple manages their intercultural and interfaith household.

Vance explained that Usha, who grew up in a Hindu but not particularly religious family, has often accompanied him to church. He also revealed that when they met, both were largely non-religious. “I would have considered myself an agnostic or an atheist,” Vance said, adding that their faith journeys evolved over time.

The couple has since made a joint decision to raise their three children Ewan, Vivek and Mirabel in the Christian tradition, with the children attending a Christian school. “Every family finds its own arrangement,” Vance said, underscoring mutual respect as the foundation of their relationship.

Faith & Family: A Perspective by Usha Vance

Usha Vance spoke about their interfaith family dynamic on Meghan McCain's Citizen McCain podcast. She shared that the kids do attend Catholic school, but have been given the autonomy to choose whether they get baptized.

"They can choose if they would like to be baptized Catholic and go through the process with their classmates," she said. Usha also shared that JD actually converted to Catholicism after the birth of their first child which really opened up some deep conversations on faith, parenting and personal conviction.

Gratitude, Respect & Faith in Balance

While JD Vance's public faith has become a defining part of his political image, both he and Usha have made a point to mention that their marriage is based upon shared moral values, not identical belief systems.

Usha once said to Fox News, "My parents are Hindu. That made them very good people. I've seen the power of that in my own life." Like her husband, she is stressing the thought that spirituality-no matter the form can coexist with love, respect and understanding in a modern, pluralistic America.
