Into this simmering cauldron of tensions, Jared Kushner son-in-law of Donald Trump sent a chilling message regarding the fate of the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. In an interview on CBS News, Kushner made it clear that peace will depend on what happens next whether Gaza is controlled by a legitimate government that can exclude extremist elements. If that happens, he thinks Hamas will be finished for good.
A US backed peace initiative stipulates that violence is to come to an end yet what is most important is that there is a sustainable political solution to Gaza. Kushner has stressed that unless reputable structures a government for the Palestinians with international advisors are established, any such regime will fill the vacuum that Hamas has used over the years without this structure in place, peace in Gaza could become a catalyst for future conflict once again, he maintained.

The ceasefire notwithstanding, sporadic acts of violence threaten its consolidation and renewed hostilities between Hamas militants and Israeli forces over the weekend loomed ominously upon the already fragile truce being negotiated. The Hamas thus stands warned by Kushner before it feels strengthened re-establishing itself on the ground, reclaiming its lost influence. Recent disturbing footage allegedly shows Hamas fighters executing suspected collaborators and complicating the long road to peace.
At this time, U.S. intelligence is warning that Hamas might be in a position to plan attacks against Palestinian civilians should it be such it would constitute another violation of the ceasefire and would very likely bring down the entire peace mechanism. The Biden administration has stated clearly any attack made on civilians will be treated with utmost seriousness as a breach of the agreement.

While the release of 20 hostages and the return of some deceased captives marked a bright beginning for the truce, the success of the peace plan depends heavily on what fills the vacuum in Gaza. The proposed interim authority, backed and observed internationally by a Board of Peace chaired by Donald Trump, is still in its early stages. If such authority does not gain effective control and public trust, Gaza will plunge again into lawlessness, scrapping whatever relatively little progress has been made.
The future of Gaza now hangs precariously between an intangible peace and the constant threat of renewed conflict.
