Former First Lady Michelle Obama has said that the United States still does not have the mindset to elect a woman as president. Her remarks come after the failed presidential runs of Kamala Harris and Hillary Clinton.

“We Ain’t Ready,” Says Michelle Obama

While speaking at an event, Obama argued that the country has not yet created enough space for women to take the top leadership role. “As we saw in this past election, sadly, we ain’t ready,” she said.

During a conversation with Tracee Ellis Ross about her new book, she repeated the same concern and pointed to the mindset of many American men.

“As we saw in this past election, sadly, we ain’t ready. We got a lot of growing up to do and there’s still … a lot of men who do not feel like they can be led by a woman and we saw it," she explained.

Speculation About Her Own Candidacy Continues

Michelle Obama continues to be one of the most popular and influential Democratic figures. Because of this, many of her supporters urge her to run for president before every major election.

However, she has firmly rejected the idea multiple times.
“I will not run for president. No, nope, not going to do it,” she said back in 2016 before the Trump–Clinton race.

Rumors resurfaced again during the 2024 presidential election between Joe Biden and Donald Trump, especially when voter dissatisfaction with Biden increased and Kamala Harris emerged as the leading Democratic contender.

Obama’s Strong Message While Campaigning for Harris

Michelle Obama also campaigned for Kamala Harris in 2024. At a rally, she said that Donald Trump posed serious dangers to women’s rights and overall welfare.

“Please, please do not hand our fates over to the likes of Trump, who knows nothing about us, who has shown deep contempt for us. Because a vote for him is a vote against us, against our health, against our worth,” she warned at an event in Michigan.
