After several rounds of negotiations, the United States has officially sent Iran a new nuclear proposal. Both the White House and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed the development. Interestingly, the proposal reached Iran through Oman’s Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi, who visited Tehran briefly.
Offer Follows Alarming IAEA Report
Notably, the US offer came shortly after the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) issued a report. The agency stated that Iran had further increased its production of enriched uranium. This step has raised serious global concerns, as uranium enriched to high levels can be used to make nuclear weapons.
White House Urges Swift Acceptance
Meanwhile, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt spoke about the deal. She said, “It is in Tehran’s best interest to accept the deal.” She also added, “President Trump has made it clear that Iran can never obtain a nuclear bomb.”
According to her, President Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, had sent a “detailed and acceptable” proposal to Tehran.
Iran Promises to Respond
On the other hand, Araghchi assured that Iran would respond soon. He wrote on X, “The US proposal will be appropriately responded to in line with the principles, national interests and rights of the people of Iran.”
So far, both nations have avoided disclosing the full contents of the deal.
IAEA Raises Red Flag on Uranium
Earlier this week, the IAEA reported that Iran now holds more than 400 kg of uranium enriched to 60 percent purity. This level is far higher than what is needed for peaceful energy use or research.
Although 60 percent is not yet weapons-grade, further refining could allow Iran to create as many as 10 nuclear bombs. As a result, the IAEA report has triggered concern across the West.
US Allies May Call for Action
As a result of the IAEA’s findings, the US, UK, France, and Germany may push the IAEA’s board to declare Iran in violation of non-proliferation rules. However, Iran continues to defend its nuclear program as peaceful.
In response, Iranian state media called the IAEA report “politically motivated” and full of “baseless accusations.”
Iran Warns Against Further Pressure
Furthermore, Iran has warned it will take “appropriate measures” if countries push for action at the IAEA’s board meeting.
Since returning to the White House, President Trump has aimed to negotiate a new nuclear deal with Iran. Talks between the two countries have been ongoing since April.
US Eyes New Deal After 2018 Withdrawal
To recall, Trump had earlier withdrawn the US from the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in 2018. That deal included Iran and six major powers: the US, UK, China, Russia, France, and Germany.
Now, the US is seeking a revised agreement to limit Iran’s nuclear capacity and prevent it from acquiring a bomb.
