In the UK, a subtle change in police uniform policy has precipitated a very loud controversy. The so-called magnetic hijab, whose proper title is Blue Light Hijab is being piloted and introduced by various police forces as a way of safeguarding femaleMuslim police officers in confrontational scenarios.
While some applaud what they consider is a very astute mixture of safety, practicality and inclusivity, others wonder if a predominantly secular organization such as a police force should change its uniform policy in deference to religious affiliations.
What is a Magnetic Hijab?
The magnetic hijab is designed in such a way that it consists of two parts, and it has been designed specifically for those females joining the frontline force. The top part of the hijab has been designed to come apart easily when someone tries to grab it to prevent the suffering of choking or any kind of serious injury to the hijab wearing female officer. Under the top part of the hijab, there is another securing cap with a broad front.
Who Designed the Monument & How it Came Into Being
This concept has existed in the past with the initial design by Detective Sergeant Yassin Desai, a police officer with Leicestershire Police, has existed for the last two decades as a result of recognizing the need for protective gear among officers who choose to don the hijab.

The design has since been perfected with the aid of De Montfort University, with a test intervention conducted in London in 2021.
Magnetic Hijab: Safety, Inclusion & Experience
“It is not an issue of symbol but of security and belonging,” explained supporters. Muslim woman police officers have been subjected to harassment on duty for pulling off their hijabs.
“Some of us wear the hijab for reassurance and a sense of being appreciated by the institution,” pointed out one. The redesigned hijab might make Muslim women feel that the forces want them in law-enforcement careers.

Magnetic Hijab: Justification of the Resistance to the Design
Despite all these advantages, however, the Blue Light Hijab has not yet been universally accepted. The reason for this is that all 43 forces must agree on a modification to the uniforms and to date, no such agreement has been reached.
There are concerns that allowing religious attire in the service could set certain precedents in terms of religious attire in certain sectors. However, some believe that more importantly, the hijab has strong cultural associations and that uniform policy should not necessarily accommodate it in this way.
