San Jose police have arrested a 17-year-old male in connection with a shooting that injured three people and sent a mall into panic on Black Friday. A 21-year-old woman, reportedly a family member, was also arrested for allegedly aiding his escape, as investigators point to gang conflict as the likely motive.

What Happened During the Shooting?

The incident unfolded on the evening of November 28 inside the mall, near a Macy's store. Police say a verbal argument between two groups escalated when the teenage suspect pulled a handgun from his waistband and fired. The gunfire struck three people: an adult man believed to be the intended target from a rival group, an adult woman, and a 16-year-old girl. The latter two were apparently hit by stray bullets. All victims sustained non-life-threatening injuries and have been released from the hospital.

Who is the Suspect and What is His Background?

The primary suspect is a 17-year-old male whose identity is withheld due to his age. Authorities revealed he was on probation at the time of the shooting for a prior firearms offense, having been arrested earlier this year for carrying a loaded gun. Police Chief Paul Joseph heavily criticized the state's juvenile justice system, stating, “Young offenders feel almost no fear of consequences. They bring guns into our malls and fire indiscriminately."

What is the Suspected Motive?

Police cite preliminary evidence suggesting the shooting was gang-related. The suspect's group was reportedly wearing "gang-related clothing," and investigators believe he mistakenly identified the male victim as a rival gang member. The chief confirmed the two men were strangers before the altercation, with minimal interaction before the shooting started.

What About the Accomplice?

A 21-year-old woman seen on surveillance video pushing a stroller was arrested on suspicion of helping the teen flee. Prosecutors note she has a familial relationship with the suspect and is expected to face charges. Her specific role and knowledge of the crime will be key details as the case develops.
