Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced the successful test of a nuclear-powered underwater drone, fueling international concern about Moscow's expanding nuclear strength. The test, which came just days after another test of a cruise missile that would be nuclear-armed is done in defiance of U.S. President Donald Trump's explicit warning not to pursue further weapons testing. The action reflects Russia's insistence on continuing to expand its strategic weapon systems even as fighting continues in Ukraine.
Poseidon is alternatively known as a nuclear-powered underwater drone or torpedo, is among Russia's latest weapons. It is engineered to move faster than regular submarines and Poseidon can reach intercontinental range without being detected. Russian state media says it is deployed at depths greater than one kilometre and travels at speeds up to 70 knots. Most significantly, it can have a nuclear warhead weighing up to two megatons able to create devastating underwater blasts.

Putin said Poseidon was unparalleled in terms of speed and depth and that no currently existing defense system could intercept it. The weapon was initially presented in his 2018 address to the country along with other new-generation systems to enhance Russia's nuclear deterrence.
Only days before the Poseidon test, Putin announced another trial this one of the Burevestnik cruise missile, with an unlimited range. Nuclear-powered is the missile can evade conventional missile defenses by flying long distances at low altitudes with both Poseidon and Burevestnik symbolize Russia's efforts to update its nuclear arsenal and counter U.S. and NATO technological supremacy.

U.S. President Donald Trump, who has been calling for a halt in the war in Ukraine lashed out at Putin's continued weapons testing. After the Burevestnik announcement, Trump declared, "He should get the war in Ukraine over. A war that should have lasted one week is now shortly in its fourth year." The U.S. president recently called off a scheduled summit with Putin in Budapest due to Russia's refusal to agree to a ceasefire or peace talks.
The fresh weapons tests have raised alarm in Western capitals which see them as destabilizing at a time of increased geopolitical tensions. While Russia maintains its tests are for defense, critics interpret them as a calculated display of power in the midst of international isolation. While Moscow and Washington double down on their rhetoric, the world waits nervously for indications of resurfacing nuclear brinkmanship at a time when diplomacy appears more vulnerable than ever.
