U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that he would not attend the upcoming G20 foreign ministers’ meeting in South Africa. His decision came after he accused the host country of promoting an “anti-American” agenda. Notably, his announcement followed President Donald Trump’s strong criticism of South Africa’s land reforms.

Trump Condemns South Africa’s Land Policies

Earlier this week, Trump lashed out at South Africa’s efforts to address land inequality caused by apartheid. In response, Rubio reaffirmed Trump’s stance and confirmed that he would boycott the event scheduled for February 20-21 in Johannesburg.

Rubio Criticizes South Africa’s G20 Approach

Taking to X, Rubio wrote, “South Africa is doing very bad things. Expropriating private property. Using G20 to promote ‘solidarity, equality, & sustainability.’” Furthermore, he dismissed these themes as nothing more than “DEI and climate change.”

Trump’s War Against DEI Continues

Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) have faced relentless opposition from Trump since he returned to office. Likewise, Rubio justified his decision, stating, “My job is to advance America’s national interests, not waste taxpayer money or coddle anti-Americanism.”

Ramaphosa Rejects Trump’s Allegations

Meanwhile, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa pushed back against Trump’s claims of land confiscation. He also stressed that he was willing to clarify his government’s policies to U.S. leaders. In addition, he spoke with Trump ally Elon Musk on Tuesday to raise concerns about “disinformation” being spread by the U.S. president.

Land Ownership Still Sparks Debate

Even though apartheid ended three decades ago, most farmland in South Africa remains in white ownership. Consequently, the government faces mounting pressure to implement reforms and redistribute land more equitably.

U.S. Absence Weakens G20 Meeting

Since the United States is the world’s largest economy, its absence from the G20 meeting could weaken the forum’s effectiveness. Moreover, Rubio’s decision means he will miss a potential first meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. As a result, Trump’s diplomatic efforts on the Ukraine war could face further challenges.
