Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will travel to the United States for a two-day visit starting February 12. He will meet US President Donald Trump to discuss trade, defense, and immigration, according to sources.
Trump Stresses Fair Trade and Security Deals
On January 27, Trump called Modi to talk about bilateral trade and security. During the conversation, he urged India to buy more American security equipment. Furthermore, he emphasized the need for fair trade relations between the two nations.
After completing his two-day trip to Paris, Modi will head to Washington, D.C., sources added.
Modi to Attend AI Symposium in France
Before visiting the US, Modi will be in France from February 10 to 11. He will co-chair an artificial intelligence symposium hosted by President Emmanuel Macron.
Although Trump received an invitation, Vice President JD Vance is expected to represent the United States at the event.
Key Meetings in Washington
Modi will land in Washington, D.C., on the evening of February 12. The following day, he will hold bilateral discussions with Trump.
Notably, this visit will be Modi’s first trip to the US since Trump won his second term on January 20.
Strengthening US-India Relations
Modi will be among the first world leaders to visit Washington after Trump’s re-election. Consequently, the meeting will hold significant diplomatic importance.
Since the US considers India a key ally in countering China, both nations aim to strengthen economic ties. Additionally, India wants easier visa approvals for skilled workers.
At the same time, India seeks to avoid US-imposed tariffs. Previously, Trump threatened tariffs due to India’s high import duties on US goods.
India-US Trade Ties
Importantly, the United States remains India’s largest trade partner. In 2023-2024, bilateral trade exceeded $118 billion. Moreover, India recorded a $32 billion trade surplus with the US.
