Pakistan Monsoon Havoc: 657 Dead, Nearly 1,000 Injured

Severe monsoon rains in Pakistan have left 657 dead and nearly 1,000 injured, with widespread flooding destroying homes, infrastructure, and livelihoods. Rescue teams face challenges as displaced families seek shelter and urgent humanitarian aid.

At least 657 people have died and nearly 1,000 others were injured amid rain-related incidents across Pakistan since June 26, official data reveals.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDAM) spokesperson, Tayyab Shah informed that the heavy rains will continue till August 22 during a press briefing on Sunday. He further stated that Pakistan may face 'two or three more monsoon spells' in September. He highlighted that this year's rainfall has been 50-60% heavier than last year and termed it as 'the most destructive in recent memory'.

Provincial Impact

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: The area is the worst affected with 390 recorded deaths, including 288 men, 59 children, and 49 women. Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) DG Asfandyar Khattak confirmed that approximately 150 people are missing in Buner and Shangla districts. He noted that 84 people, including 21 from a family preparing for a wedding, died in flash floods caused by a cloudburst in Buner.

  • Punjab recorded 164 deaths, including 70 children, 63 men, and 31 women.
  • Sindh reported 28 deaths, including 14 children and 4 women.
  • Balochistan reported 20 deaths, including 11 children.
  • Gilgit-Baltistan reported 32 deaths, including 8 children.
  • Pakistan-occupied Kashmir reported 15 deaths, including 5 minors.
  • Islamabad reported 8 deaths, including 4 children.

Rescue Operations

Khattak stated that five helicopters are conducting a rescue mission. Provincial government has released PKR 1.5 billion for relief operation. 33 trucks have been sent to Buner, 8 to Swat, and 7 to Bajaur to deliver supplies. 

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has ordered federal ministers to closely monitor relief operations in KP. The relief package includes food, tents, and medicines.
