As the world prepares to turn the page on another year, the first signs of 2026 have already arrived. While most countries are still counting down, the New Year has officially begun in the Pacific, where the clock struck midnight in Kiribati’s Line Islands.

Located near the International Date Line, Kiribati once again led the world into a new calendar year, marking the earliest arrival of January 1, 2026, anywhere on the planet.

Kiribati Welcomes New Year 2026

Kiritimati, also known as Christmas Island, is the first inhabited place on Earth to enter the New Year. The island falls under the UTC+14 time zone, making it the world’s earliest time zone.

As midnight passed locally, residents of Kiritimati welcomed 2026 while much of the globe was still in the previous year. This annual moment has made Kiribati symbolic of fresh beginnings and global time transitions.

Kiribati Becomes the First to Enter the New Year 2026

Kiribati changed its time zones in 1995 to bring all its islands under the same calendar day. Before this change, parts of the country were almost a full day apart.

By shifting the Line Islands to UTC+14, Kiribati ensured it would always be the first nation to greet a new day and a new year. Since then, Kiritimati has held the title of the world’s earliest inhabited location to welcome January 1.

Caroline Island, also called Millennium Island, lies slightly farther east. However, it remains uninhabited, which keeps Kiritimati at the centre of New Year attention.

Which Countries Welcome the New Year After Kiribati?

After Kiribati, the New Year spreads westward across the Pacific and Asia. Several island nations and countries in Oceania follow within hours.

Tonga and Samoa are among the next countries to enter 2026. New Zealand follows soon after, with the Chatham Islands celebrating ahead of the mainland. Australia, Japan and China then join the New Year as midnight moves across time zones.
