8 shot near Coney Island after July 4 fireworks

New York: Eight people, including four children, were shot near Coney Island in New York City’s Brooklyn borough shortly after Independence Day fireworks, police said.

The shooting took place around 10pm to 10.30pm near the intersection of West 30th Street and Surf Avenue. The victims, aged between six and 37, suffered gunshot wounds to different parts of the body and were taken to nearby hospitals.

Police said a 37-year-old man was shot in the shoulder, a 33-year-old man in the chest, a 25-year-old woman in the leg and a 21-year-old woman in the chest. Among the children, a 14-year-old boy was shot in the thigh, a 12-year-old boy in the leg, a seven-year-old boy in both legs and a six-year-old boy in the stomach.

Seven of the victims were reported to be in stable condition, while the 21-year-old woman was initially listed as critical.

A firearm was recovered from a bag at the scene and has been taken into custody by investigators. Forensic teams examined the area and collected evidence.

No arrests have been made so far. The New York Police Department has appealed to residents and witnesses to share any information or video footage that could assist the investigation.
