A powerful earthquake hit Mexico City on Friday, forcing President Claudia Sheinbaum to stop her press conference in the middle. Videos shared on social media showed the ground shaking while warning alarms went off inside the hall where the briefing was taking place.

Panic and Evacuation After Tremors

As the tremors were felt, loud sirens started sounding across the building. Reporters and staff members quickly stood up and moved out of the hall to reach safer areas. President Sheinbaum also stepped away from the podium as a safety measure while the shaking continued.

Different Agencies Report Earthquake Strength

Mexico’s National Seismological Service measured the earthquake at 6.5 magnitude. Meanwhile, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) recorded it slightly lower at 6.2 magnitude.
