Green tea extracts could benefit facial development of children with Down syndrome: Study
Washington [US], March 4 (ANI): Green tea is already known for its antioxidant properties, which aid in immunity boosting and weight loss, but did you know that it can also prove beneficial for the facial development of children with Down syndrome?
According to a new study, green tea supplements modulate facial development in children with Down syndrome. The study, led by Belgian and Spanish researchers, was published in Nature Scientific Reports.
The researchers observed that the intake of green tea extracts can reduce facial dysmorphology in children with Down syndrome when taken during the first three years of life.
Additional experimental research in mice confirmed the positive effects at low doses. However, they also found that high doses of the extract can disrupt facial and bone development. More research is needed to fully understand the effects of green tea extracts and therefore they should always be taken under medical supervision.
Down syndrome is caused by the presence of a third copy of chromosome 21, leading to an overexpression of the genes in this region and resulting in a number of physical and intellectual disabilities. One of the genes, DYRK1A, contributes to altering brain and bone development in people with Down syndrome. The green tea compound EGCG (epigallocatechin-3-gallate) is known to inhibit DYRK1A activity, although it also has other mechanisms of action. Previous research has shown the potential of EGCG to improve cognition in young adults with Down syndrome.
In a new study, researchers analysed the effect of green tea supplements on facial development in Down syndrome. In the experimental part of the study, the EGCG supplements were tested in mice at different dosages.
In the second part of the research, they did an observational study on children with and without Down syndrome. This work, led by the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG), European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and the University of Barcelona in Spain, and KU Leuven in Belgium, is an international effort involving researchers from the University of Central Florida, La Salle – University Ramon Llull, and IMIM – Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute.
For the mouse study, carried out at KU Leuven, the researchers started the treatment before birth, while the pups were developing in the wombs of their mothers, by adding either a low or a high dose of green tea extracts to their drinking water. “The low dose treatment had a positive effect on mice that are a model of Down syndrome,” Professor Greetje Vande Velde (KU Leuven) commented, co-lead author of the study.
Velde added, “Sixty percent of them showed a facial shape similar to the control group.”
“The high dose treatment, however, generated very mixed results, and even disrupted normal facial development in some cases, causing additional dysmorphology. This occurred in all mice, in the model of Down syndrome as well as in the control group,” Velde further said.
The observational study was set up in Spain and also included participants from North America. 287 children between 0 and 18 years participated, including children with Down syndrome who did (n = 13) or didn’t (n = 63) receive EGCG supplementation. The treated group was all self-medicated and didn’t follow a prescribed protocol.
“All participants were photographed from various angles to create a 3D model of their faces,” explained Neus Martinez-Abadias, professor at the University of Barcelona and co-lead author of the study.
Martinez-Abadias added, “We use 21 facial landmarks, and the distances between them, to compare the faces of the participants. In the youngest group between 0 and 3 years, we observed that 57 percent of the linear distances are significantly different when you compare the faces of children with Down syndrome that never received the treatment to those of children that do not have Down syndrome. For babies and toddlers who did receive EGCG treatment, this difference was much smaller, only 25 percent. After green tea supplementation, the facial dysmorphology decreases and the children with or without Down syndrome look more alike.”
“We didn’t identify a similar effect in the adolescent group. Even when treated with green tea extracts, children with Down syndrome still show a difference of more than 50 percent compared to the control group. These findings suggest that the green tea supplements only affect facial development when they are administered in the early stages of life when the face and skull are rapidly growing,” Martinez-Abadias said.
Despite the potential benefits we observed, we must handle these findings with caution considering they are preliminary and based on an observational study,” Professor Vande Velde warns. “Much more research is necessary to evaluate the effects of EGCG-containing supplements, the appropriate dose and their therapeutic potential in general. We also need to take into the account possible effects on other organs and systems, not just on the development of the face. This requires first more basic research in the lab with mice, and then clinical studies with more participants and controlled use of these supplements.”
“Despite the potential benefits we observed, we must handle these findings with caution considering they are preliminary and based on an observational study,” Professor Vande Velde warned. (ANI)
Elle King expecting first child with Dan Tooker after multiple miscarriages
Washington [US], March 4 (ANI): Grammy-nominated singer Elle King and her fiance Dan Tooker are all set to embrace parenthood for the first time. Elle recently revealed that she is expecting her and Dan’s first child after previously suffering multiple miscarriages.
The singer-songwriter took to Instagram to announce the happy news, which comes after recurrent pregnancy losses and an infertility battle.
Along with a series of pictures featuring the much-in-love couple, Elle wrote, “Well, we did something! Me and @tattooker made a little human! We are very excited to share the news that we are pregnant.”
She added, “This news comes with a great deal of fear, and I hope that all mothers-to-be, in whatever sense that may be, know that I am trying to be very sensitive. You see, this miracle baby comes after two very big losses. It’s a terrifying and extremely painful experience for everyone. But the sun always rises, and I never really let go to let the universe decide when I was ready.”
In her lengthy post, Elle empathised with women struggling with infertility and pregnancy loss, who may find her post painful.
“I remember every pregnancy announcement felt like a dagger to me. So I want to be very delicate and say to YOU! That soon-to-be mom, who’s maybe had a loss, or has been struggling with fertility, I’m telling you, our babies come. And I love you. What women go through on this journey makes us nothing less than WARRIORS. So thank you for your prayers and love for our high-risk pregnancy,” she wrote.
The singer went on to joke about the irony of her releasing her latest single, ‘Drunk (And I Don’t Wanna Go Home)’, while expecting.
She concluded, “Ps- I would be pregnant when I put out a song called #drunk LOL but what did you expect! (I am a very sober pregnant lady btw) thank you so much @people for the exclusive feature and celebration.”
The singer suffered two pregnancy losses amid a battle with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), according to People magazine.
The condition causes hormonal imbalances and can lead to irregular cycles, which impacts ovulation. Elle got pregnant naturally after consulting a fertility specialist, found out she was expecting on December 25 last year and is currently in the second trimester of her pregnancy.
As per People magazine, the singer has opted not to find out the sex of her and Dan’s baby before she gives birth.
Elle revealed in October that she and Dan, a 31-year-old tattoo artist, had gotten engaged on their one-year dating anniversary. She had shared images of the pair’s unique joint proposal in a field in New Mexico on Instagram. (ANI)
Zack Snyder to be honoured with special Valiant Award from Hollywood Critics Association
Washington [US], March 4 (ANI): American filmmaker Zack Snyder will be presented with the first-ever Valiant Award from The Hollywood Critics Association at the virtual fourth Annual HCA Film Awards ceremony on Friday.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Hollywood Critics Association is presenting Snyder with this first-ever Valiant Award as an honour for how the filmmaker and his wife, and producing partner, Deborah Snyder, responded to their 20-year-old daughter Autumn’s suicide in 2017.
HCA chairman, Scott Menzel, in a statement on Wednesday said, “As a fan of Synder’s ever since Dawn of the Dead, I couldn’t be happier that we will be acknowledging his visionary filmmaking and resilience to overcome any obstacles.”
Menzel added, “As someone whose own life was impacted due to suicide, I was extremely moved by how Zack and his wife and business partner Deborah turned their incommensurable pain into altruistic action, spearheading an effort that has helped countless individuals and families.”
Back in December of 2020, Snyder along with his fans had helped in raising over USD 500,000 dollars for the American Foundation of Suicide Prevention. In order to raise more funds, during the upcoming HCA Film Awards, the Hollywood critics association plans to purchase a host of Snyder’s merchandise on the Ink to the People fundraising platform to give away on their social media channels during the ceremony.
The fourth annual HCA Film Awards will stream virtually on March 5 on the official HCA Facebook page and YouTube Channel.
Meanwhile, on the work front, Snyder’s cut of ‘Justice League’ is set for a March 18 release on HBO Max. His epic zombie action-thriller ‘Army of the Dead’, which he co-wrote with Shay Hatten and directed for Netflix, is set to launch on May 21.
Snyder is also producing the German language prequel of ‘Army of the Dead’ for Netflix, as well as an animated series of the same name. (ANI)
