Former Indian and Karnataka Ranji Trophy cricketer David Johnson reportedly took his own life on Thursday by jumping from the fourth floor of a private apartment. According to sources, Johnson’s action was attributed to depression. The Kothanur police promptly arrived at the scene, and his body was transferred to Crescent Hospital for further procedures.

Who was David Johnson?

David Jude Johnson, born on October 16, 1971, in Arasikere, Karnataka, was a right-handed batsman and right-arm medium-fast bowler. He had notable achievements in his cricket career, particularly in the Indian domestic circuit, including the Ranji Trophy.

Career Highlights:

Ranji Trophy Impact: Johnson had a significant impact during the 1995-1996 Ranji Trophy season. He achieved his best match figures of 10 for 152 against Kerala, which brought him into the limelight.

Test Debut: Johnson made his Test debut for India against Australia in 1996 at the Ferozshah Kotla, Delhi. He was brought into the squad as a replacement for the injured spinner Javagal Srinath. In this match, he bowled alongside fellow Karnataka player Venkatesh Prasad and took the wicket of Michael Slater in the second innings.

Tour of South Africa: Following his debut, Johnson was selected for the South African tour and played in the first Test. During this match, he dismissed Brian McMillan and Herschelle Gibbs.

Despite these promising starts, Johnson’s international career did not flourish as expected. He struggled with maintaining control over his delivery and consistency, which limited his impact on the international stage.

One of Johnson’s notable feats was clocking a bowling speed of 157.8 km/h during a Test match against Australia. He played two Tests for India in 1996.

David Johnson’s untimely death at the age of 52 has shocked the cricket community, which has expressed condolences and remembered his contributions to the sport.
