India’s passport has been ranked 82nd on the Henley Passport Index 2024, reflecting its ability to grant visa-free entry to 58 destinations worldwide. This ranking positions the Indian passport as a moderately strong travel document, enabling its holders to visit popular tourist spots such as Indonesia, the Maldives, and Thailand without the need for a visa.

In contrast, Singapore has earned the top spot on the index, boasting the world’s most powerful passport. Singaporean citizens can travel visa-free to an impressive 195 countries. France, Italy, Germany, Spain, and Japan follow closely, each with access to 192 destinations.

The third position is shared by Austria, Finland, Ireland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, South Korea, and Sweden, whose passports allow visa-free entry to 191 countries. The United Kingdom, alongside New Zealand, Norway, Belgium, Denmark, and Switzerland, holds the fourth spot, with visa-free access to 190 countries. Australia and Portugal jointly occupy the fifth place, providing visa-free travel to 189 destinations.

The United States has dropped to eighth place, offering visa-free entry to 186 countries. The Henley Passport Index ranks 34 countries within the top 10 for passport strength.

The index, compiled by Henley & Partners, is based on data from the International Air Transport Authority (IATA). It evaluates passports based on the number of destinations their holders can access without a visa, assuming standard entry requirements and short-term travel for tourism or business purposes. Complex scenarios, such as diplomatic travel or temporary passports, are not considered in the rankings.
