The Great Blue Hole – A Natural Wonder

Located off the coast of Belize, the Great Blue Hole is a giant marine sinkhole and one of Earth’s most iconic underwater marvels

Measuring over 300 meters across and 125 meters deep, it lies at the center of Lighthouse Reef, around 100 km from mainland Belize

Its perfect circle and deep blue hue sharply contrast with the turquoise shallows, making it visible even from space

The hole is lined with ancient caves and rock formations, with stalactites formed when the area was once above sea level

In 1971, famed oceanographer Jacques Cousteau called it one of the world’s top ten dive sites putting it on every diver’s bucket list

Divers descend to witness eerie caves and encounter reef sharks, groupers, and the occasional nurse shark

Due to its depth and structure, the Blue Hole is best for experienced divers but guided dives are available for many skill levels

It lies within the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its biodiversity and beauty

Unlike volcanic atolls, Belize’s reef systems formed over limestone fault blocks adding to the site's global geological importance
