On August 24, 2025, Nepal officially became a member of the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) by signing its Framework Agreement

The IBCA, launched by India in April 2023, is a global coalition dedicated to conserving seven principal big cat species—including tigers, lions, snow leopards, and leopards

Nepal is home to iconic big cats like the tiger, snow leopard, and common leopard—making its IBCA membership ecologically significant

Nepal’s joining the alliance strengthens global cooperation in big cat conservation, aiming to enhance efforts against poaching and promote biodiversity

Since 2009, Nepal has nearly tripled its tiger population—from just 121 to 355 by 2022—a testament to its successful wildlife protection strategies

The IBCA, currently composed of over 90 member and observer countries, fosters shared strategies, capacity building, and resource mobilization

Nepal’s membership marks a significant step toward collective ecological security—strengthening global efforts to protect and preserve majestic big cats
