June 2024: Pride Month Explained

June is celebrated as LGBT+ Pride Month, commemorating the first anniversary of the violent police raid at New York's Stonewall Inn, a gay bar, which occurred in late June 1970.

A series of protests and movements for LGBTQ rights were sparked on June 28, 1969, during a time when many people kept their identity or orientation quiet.

The first Pride Week began with marches in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco.

In 1999, President Bill Clinton proclaimed June as Gay and Lesbian Pride Month

Pride's rainbow-laden parades and festivals celebrate the advancements of the LGBTQ civil rights movement.
