Georgia Abortion Law Keeps Brain-Dead Nurse Alive

In February 30-year-old Adriana Smith, a nine-week pregnant nurse, suffered severe headaches. Despite visiting a local hospital, no CT scan was performed

Doctors prescribed medication without proper tests. The next morning, Smith was found gasping in her sleep, and a CT scan later revealed multiple brain clots

Smith was rushed for emergency surgery, but it was too late. She was declared brain-dead, yet remains on life support more than 90 days later

Georgia's LIFE Act bans abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected, allowing exceptions only for limited medical emergencies or severe fetal abnormalities

Doctors ruled Smith’s case does not qualify as a medical emergency under the law, prohibiting ending the pregnancy despite her irreversible condition

Her mother, April Newkirk, said, “They’re keeping her alive for 11 more weeks to deliver the baby, even though he may face severe health challenges”

Newkirk’s grandson still believes his mother is “just sleeping.” The family faces mounting costs, trauma, and uncertainty about the baby’s future

“This decision should’ve been ours,” Newkirk says, advocating for a woman’s right to choose. “Now we’re left wondering about the life he’ll have”
