Canada polls: The rise and sharp fall of Indo-Canadian leader Jagmeet Singh
Jagmeet Singh made history in 2017 as the first person of color to lead a major Canadian federal party
He won his seat in Burnaby South in 2019 and retained it in two more federal elections building strong momentum
In 2022 Singh struck a deal with Trudeau’s Liberals to keep their minority government afloat costing him public support
By late 2024 Singh pulled out of the agreement citing broken promises but the damage to his party’s image was done
In 2025 the NDP won only seven seats and Singh lost his own riding finishing third with less than 19 percent
Singh said he will resign as leader once a temporary replacement is named ending his tenure after nearly eight years
His fall highlights the risks of coalition politics and how quickly public trust can shift in Canadian elections
