Australia’s Coast Witnesses Another Mass Whale Stranding

A false killer whale mass stranding of 157 off Arthur River, Tasmania, resulted in 67 dead and authorities having to euthanize 90 others that were left alive

The incident  occurred on Wednesday at a remote beach in northwest Tasmania

The cause is unclear, but experts cite disorientation, illness, and climate change as possible factors

Experts concluded that remaining whales were too weak and would not survive

The rescue effort was spearheaded by the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania (NRE Tas), with marine biologists and wildlife specialists

The location and weather conditions being remote and harsh made it almost impossible to get teams to refloat the whales into the ocean

The state witnessed a number of mass strandings, such as 230 pilot whales in the year 2022 and the biggest event in 2020, when almost 470 whales got stranded
