Australia Post has suspended shipments to the US and Puerto Rico starting August 26, 2025, after new American tariff rules were announced
The suspension comes after Washington scrapped the de minimis rule, which earlier allowed goods worth under $800 to enter the US duty-free
Only letters, documents, and gifts valued below $100 will be exempt from the suspension and new customs duties under the updated rules
Australia Post had earlier warned customers of delivery delays in June due to flight capacity issues impacting shipments to and from the US
Several other countries, including India, Germany, Switzerland, Japan and South Korea, have also suspended certain postal services to the United States
Japan Post said the suspension would have limited impact since alternatives exist, while Korea Post continues some deliveries via its UPS tie-up
FedEx Australia confirmed it will keep shipping to the US but customers may face additional duties and service-related fees on deliveries
The move is expected to affect businesses and individuals relying on cheaper shipping, with rising costs and fewer postal options available
Australia Post said it is monitoring the situation closely and will update customers as tariff changes officially take effect on August 29
