Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, Former Malaysian Prime Minister, Dies at 85
Known for his gentle demeanor, Abdullah succeeded Mahathir Mohamad in 2003 after serving under all post-independence leaders
He led Barisan Nasional to a record-breaking election win in 2005 but saw his popularity decline in later years
As premier, Abdullah focused on anti-corruption, cutting mega-projects, and promoting economic reforms and global competitiveness
Despite a large stimulus plan, he faced criticism over rising inflation and a slowing economy, eventually stepping down in 2009
Abdullah began showing signs of cognitive decline after retirement, as revealed by his son-in-law in 2022
He is survived by his second wife Jeanne Abdullah and two children; his first wife, Endon Mahmood, died in 2005
