This week, We Women Want takes up the issue of body shaming with Instagram influencer Anindita Roy, who goes by the name “The Plus Girl.” As she points out, being fat does not mean you are unhealthy. Being healthy or not also depends on your lifestyle and level of physical fitness.
PREJUDICE
Slim people can be unhealthy too, so why single out the plus sizes for body shaming?” she asks. She points out how difficult it is to get plus sizes off the shelves, and most stores have moved the larger sizes to the online section. Designers may claim to make large sizes, but they only go up to size 40. What about size 60 and up? she inquires.
MATRIMONY
She also points out that matrimonial advertisements are the worst offenders, with their emphasis on fair and slim brides, and adds that men do not escape the body shaming. J
JUDGEMENT
In fact, in school, it is the plus-sized boys who are shamed more than the plussized girls. And who gives society the right to judge or decide what is normal and what is overweight. It was a very candid conversation, with the Plus Girl raising some very relevant issues that have become the trademark of We Women Want, moderated by Priya Sahgal, Senior Executive Editor.
