Maldivian Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer, during his official visit to India, assured on Thursday that steps are being taken to prevent the recurrence of ‘derogatory remarks’ against India. Zameer, as reported by newswire ANI, expressed that both the Maldives and India have moved beyond the issue and are addressing it appropriately.
“We have acknowledged that such remarks do not reflect the stance of our government, and we are committed to ensuring they do not happen again. There was a misunderstanding on social media, which we are resolving. Both governments understand the situation and are moving forward,” Zameer stated to ANI.
The relationship between the two countries faced strain when former Maldivian ministers made disparaging comments about Prime Minister Narendra Modi following his visit to Lakshadweep. Further tensions arose when Mohamed Muizzu set a deadline of May 10 for Indian military personnel to leave the Maldives.
Meanwhile, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar discussed with Moosa Zameer the importance of enhancing bilateral engagement and cooperation between India and the Maldives, emphasizing mutual interests.
Following the meeting, Zameer shared on X that they exchanged views on enhancing ties and collaboration bilaterally and internationally.

Addressing declining tourism, Zameer highlighted the Maldives’ warm welcome to Indian tourists, expressing confidence in the resurgence of Indian visitors in the near future, despite recent fluctuations.
Regarding maritime security, Zameer emphasized the shared interest of India, Maldives, Sri Lanka, and neighbouring countries in maintaining peace and security in the Indian Ocean.
Regarding economic cooperation, Zameer underscored the significance of economic ties with India for the Maldivian economy and expressed gratitude for the support received from the Indian government through debt relief and grants. He emphasized the need for discussions based on factual figures regarding any outstanding debt.
