In the Lok Sabha, Leader of Opposition and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi conveyed that early in the morning, Wayanad had been struck by several devastating landslides resulting in the death of over 70 people.

He noted that Mundakkai village had been cut off and the full extent of the loss of lives and damage had yet to be assessed due to the scale of the tragedy. Gandhi mentioned that he had spoken to the Defence Minister and the Chief Minister of Kerala.

He urged the Union Government to provide all possible support for rescue and medical care, to immediately release compensation to the deceased, suggesting an increase in the compensation amount, to restore vital transport and communication lines, to set up relief efforts at the earliest, and to prepare a roadmap for the rehabilitation of the affected families.

He highlighted the ongoing threat of landslides in many areas of Wayanad and the Western Ghats, and expressed concern over the alarming rise in landslides in recent years. Gandhi emphasized the urgent need for mapping landslide-prone areas, implementing mitigation measures, and developing an action plan to address the increasing frequency of natural calamities in the ecologically fragile region.
