Ukraine Blames Russia for Deadly Missile Strike on Boarding School

Ukraine has blamed Russian forces for a missile strike on a boarding school in the Kursk region. The school was reportedly housing people preparing for evacuation as reported. According to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the attack destroyed the school in the border town of Sudzha.

Zelenskyy Strongly Condemns Russia’s Actions

Zelenskyy condemned Russia’s actions, emphasizing that many of the people in the school were civilians, including Russians. He stated, “This is how Russia wages war: Sudzha, Kursk region, Russian territory, a boarding school with civilians preparing to evacuate.” He further compared Russia’s actions to its attacks on Chechnya and Syria, claiming that they use the same brutal tactics.

Casualties and Ongoing Rescue Efforts

The authorities confirmed that four people were killed, and 84 others were rescued from the wreckage. Furthermore, four individuals are in serious condition. Meanwhile, Ukrainian military forces continue to search for survivors or bodies amidst the rubble.

Russia Denies Responsibility and Shifts Blame

In contrast, Russia released a statement blaming Ukraine for the attack. The Russian Defense Ministry accused the Ukrainian military of committing a war crime by targeting the school. As tensions rise, some unofficial Russian military bloggers have also suggested that Ukrainian forces were behind the strike.

Ongoing Attacks Heighten Tensions

This missile strike comes amidst increasing unrest in the Kursk region. Since August, Ukrainian forces have held parts of the area after a cross-border incursion. On the same day as the school attack, Russia launched drone and missile strikes on Ukraine, killing 15 people and causing extensive damage to residential buildings and energy infrastructure.

Further Casualties in Ukraine’s Northeast

In Kharkiv, one person was killed and four others wounded in a drone attack. Additionally, three police officers were killed while patrolling a village in the northeastern region of Sumy. These attacks further highlight the escalating violence in the region.
