On Tuesday, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) and Israel Security Agency (ISA) carried out a targeted strike on a Hamas command and control center located beneath the European Hospital in Khan Yunis, southern Gaza.
In a post shared on X, the IDF stated that the operation was aimed at Hamas terrorists operating within underground infrastructure beneath the hospital. The IDF accused Hamas of using medical facilities to shield its operations, putting civilian lives at risk.
Measures Taken to Avoid Civilian Harm
The IDF emphasized that it used precise munitions and conducted aerial surveillance to limit civilian casualties. “Numerous steps were taken to mitigate the risk of harming civilians and civilian infrastructure,” the statement said.
Despite these precautions, Gaza’s Health Ministry reported that nine missiles struck in and around the hospital courtyard. According to Al Jazeera, at least 16 people were killed and 70 others were injured in the attack.
Hostage Edan Alexander Returns to Israel
In a separate development, Israeli-American hostage Edan Alexander returned home after 584 days in Hamas captivity. His release was announced shortly after the strike.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called it an emotional moment and credited both Israeli military efforts and diplomatic pressure from US President Donald Trump. “This is a very emotional moment – Edan Alexander has returned home. We embrace him and we embrace his family,” said Netanyahu.
He also confirmed his conversation with President Trump, stating, “He said: ‘I am committed to Israel; to continuing to work with you in close cooperation’ – in order to achieve all of our war objectives: Releasing all of the hostages, and defeating Hamas.”
Continuing Tensions and Global Reaction
The strike has drawn international attention, with concerns raised over the safety of civilians in conflict zones. Meanwhile, Israel reiterated its commitment to dismantling Hamas’ network, even as global voices call for restraint and humanitarian protection.
