In a tragic accident, a young woman lost her life after accidentally stumbling off a treadmill and falling out of a third-floor window at a gym in Pontianak, West Kalimantan, Indonesia. The incident, which occurred around 1 pm on Tuesday, June 18, was captured in a video that has since surfaced online.
Watch Here:
The 22-year-old was running on the treadmill and paused to wipe her face with a towel when she lost her balance, tripped backward, and fell out of the open window. Despite her desperate attempt to grab onto the window frame, she fell three stories. She was immediately taken to the hospital with severe head injuries but, sadly, could not be saved. An autopsy revealed extensive bruising and lacerations to her head.
An investigation revealed that the distance between the treadmill and the window was only 60 cm, creating a “dangerous” situation. Although warning stickers were in place advising against opening windows, the sticker was reportedly damaged. The gym owner explained that the treadmills were positioned with their backs facing the windows to preserve the view, and there were usually personal trainers responsible for closing open windows, but one was on a break at the time of the accident. Consequently, the gym was closed for three days.
Authorities are investigating the gym for possible negligence, and its operating permit will be re-examined. Police are questioning witnesses and seeking expert opinions as part of their investigation.
This tragic incident has sparked concerns about safety measures in gyms, with calls for stricter regulations to prevent similar accidents in the future.
