When preparing for your next getaway, packing high heels might seem like a no-brainer—unless, of course, you’re heading to Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. In this charming coastal town, there’s an unusual rule that could leave you rethinking your footwear.
According to San Francisco-based travel vlogger Zory, wearing high heels taller than two inches in Carmel without a permit is illegal. Zory shared this quirky detail with her Instagram followers, posting a video where she toured the town’s narrow alleys and cobblestone streets. In her post, she explained, “Did you know it’s illegal to wear high heels in this town in California?”
The rule aims to prevent accidents on Carmel’s famously uneven pavements. With tree roots and irregular surfaces in the town, stilettos can be a tricky choice, potentially leading to unfortunate falls. To avoid this, anyone wishing to wear heels above two inches must get a permit from City Hall.
“It’s not ideal for high heels,” Zory continued, capturing footage of herself navigating the town’s picturesque yet challenging streets. “If you don’t want to break the law, you have to apply for a permit at City Hall. But don’t worry – it’s free, fast & easy. Plus, it makes for a great story.”
The permit process is straightforward, according to Zory, but the town’s unique rule has an interesting backstory. “This seemingly strange law was put in place by the city attorney in 1963 to protect the city from lawsuits caused by high-heeled shoe wearers tripping on uneven pavement affected by tree roots,” she explained in the comments section of her post.
Though it may seem like a quirky regulation, this rule is designed to keep visitors safe while maintaining Carmel’s enchanting atmosphere. So, next time you visit, be sure to leave your high heels at home—or better yet, get that permit!
