Why ‘Wear White For Rohit On 21st May’ Is Trending On X?

Following the overwhelming support shown by Royal Challengers Bangalore fans for Virat Kohli’s Test career, Mumbai Indians fans are preparing to do the same for Rohit Sharma. On Tuesday, “Wear White For Rohit” began trending on X (formerly Twitter), as thousands pledged to honour the India Test captain’s contributions by wearing white jerseys at Wankhede Stadium.

This fan-led movement aims to give Sharma the farewell he never received, mirroring the recent tribute to Kohli. Despite the rain-washed Bengaluru match, Kohli’s fans had turned up in white jerseys, celebrating his Test career in full spirit. Now, Rohit Sharma’s supporters are ready to follow suit.

Sudden Retirement Shocks Fans

Rohit Sharma had quietly announced his retirement from Test cricket earlier in May through an Instagram story, without any prior indication or formal farewell match. In his message, Sharma wrote,
“Hello everyone, I would just like to share that I am retiring from Test cricket. It’s been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites. Thank you for all the love and support over the years. I will continue to represent India in the ODI format.”

The 38-year-old batsman finished his Test career with 4,301 runs at an average of 40.57, including 12 centuries and 18 half-centuries in 67 matches. Under his captaincy, India won 12 of 24 Tests, with 9 losses and 3 draws. Despite his significant achievements, Sharma stepped away without a formal send-off, leaving fans feeling he deserved better.

Wankhede to Turn White on May 21

As per a viral poster circulating on social media, fans plan to wear white jerseys during the Mumbai Indians vs Delhi Capitals IPL match on Wednesday, May 21 at Wankhede Stadium, Sharma’s home ground.
“Let’s paint the Wankhede stadium white by wearing white jerseys for Rohit,” a user wrote on X.
“The guy who saved our honour for 6 years and single-handedly took us to 2 WTC finals retired from Test cricket without a proper send-off, so the least we can do for him is wear the white jersey to pay him a proper tribute.”

A High-Stakes Match Adds to the Emotion

The MI vs DC game is not just about emotion, it carries heavy playoff implications. With Gujarat Titans, RCB, and Punjab Kings already securing IPL 2025 playoff spots, the final berth remains up for grabs between Mumbai and Delhi.

Mumbai Indians currently sit in fourth place with 14 points from 12 matches, while Delhi Capitals are just behind at 13 points. A win on Wednesday would send MI through to the playoffs with 16 points. A loss, however, opens the door for Delhi and if the match is washed out, both teams would receive one point each, with their fate hanging on the outcome of their final league matches.

Delhi will face Punjab Kings on May 24, while Mumbai will take on the same side on May 26, potentially making those matches the deciding factors.

As the IPL drama heats up, Rohit Sharma fans are determined to ensure their captain gets the tribute he deserves even if it means rewriting how farewells are done in Indian cricket.
