Following Sunita Williams’ return to Earth on March 18 from a lengthy mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS), she was caught on several videos that have gone viral. The videos, which feature the 59-year-old astronaut with what seems to be a changed and prolonged chin, have caused much talk. Compared to this, before-and-after pictures of Williams are also being shared on social media. In spite of these viral accusations, specialists confirm that Williams’ chin has not changed, and the videos most likely were edited.
Specialists clarify that astronauts, such as Williams, experience a number of physical alterations as a result of long-term microgravity exposure, such as loss of bone density, muscle atrophy, and fluid shift. Yet, such alterations do not impact external physical characteristics such as a distorted chin.
Take a look:
The mission was originally planned to last eight days but was shocked by a nine-month extension following the malfunction of the Boeing Starliner spacecraft. Williams and fellow astronaut Butch Wilmore returned safely to Earth aboard SpaceX’s Dragon capsule, wrapping up their 286-day mission. They performed vital experiments, spacewalks, and maintenance on the ISS during the mission. Upon their return, they were sent to NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston for a 45-day rehabilitation program aimed at regaining muscle strength, bone density, and general physical well-being.
