In a dramatic turn of events, the ceasefire announced between India and Pakistan on Saturday evening fell apart within hours as explosions and drone sightings were reported across Jammu and Kashmir.

The truce, declared following four days of intense military escalation, cross-border drone strikes, and missile attacks, was expected to take effect from 5:00 pm IST. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stated earlier in the day, “It was agreed between them that both sides would stop all firing and military action on land and in the air and sea with effect from 1700 hours Indian Standard Time today,” referring to a call between the DGMOs of both nations.

Violations Begin Hours Later

However, barely hours into the ceasefire, security forces in Srinagar and Jammu responded to a fresh wave of drone incursions. Drone sightings were followed by explosions, prompting India’s air defence units to engage aggressively.

Citizens of Srinagar heard multiple loud blasts after dusk, particularly near the Batwara area—home to key Army installations. “This is no ceasefire. The air defence units in the middle of Srinagar just opened up,” former J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah posted on X. In another post, he added, “What the hell just happened to the ceasefire? Explosions heard across Srinagar!!”

According to officials, drones were intercepted in several districts, including Baramulla, Anantnag, Verinag, Safapora, and Bandipora. In Jammu and Udhampur, air raid sirens blared, followed by multiple explosions and temporary blackouts in certain areas.

Cross-Border Shelling and Gunfire

In addition to drone threats, Pakistani troops engaged in mortar shelling and small arms fire from the International Border and LoC areas including RS Pura, Akhnoor, and Rajouri’s Nowshera sector. A drone was reportedly shot down in the Anantnag high ground, close to another Army location.

Emergency Alert for Civilians

As tensions escalated, the Amritsar Deputy Commissioner issued emergency safety guidelines for citizens, urging people to remain indoors, turn off lights, and stay away from windows, balconies, and rooftops. Emergency contact numbers were also shared for assistance. “By way of abundant caution, please remain indoors with lights off and move away from windows. Please do not move out on the road, balcony or terrace. Don’t panic,” read the public advisory.

India’s Response and Misri’s Statement

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri condemned the breach in a late-night press briefing. “For the last few hours, there have been repeated violations of the understanding (which was) arrived at earlier this evening,” he said. He added that the armed forces have been granted a “free hand” to respond to any further provocations along both the LoC and International Border.

Pakistan Accuses India, Faces Criticism

In contrast, the Pakistani Foreign Ministry issued a statement late Saturday, falsely accusing India of breaking the ceasefire and claimed its forces were “told to act with restraint.” Analysts see this as a sign of the widening rift between Pakistan’s civilian government and its military establishment.

Tensions have escalated rapidly since India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting terror launchpads in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. Since then, Pakistan has allegedly tried to hit back by targeting both military and civilian areas along India’s northern and western borders.
