Tensions escalated in Manipur’s Imphal on Saturday night following the arrest of Arambai Tenggol (AT) leader Kanan Singh. The volatile situation took a shocking turn when a group of young men poured petrol on themselves and threatened self-immolation, a dramatic act captured on a now-viral video.
The men, dressed in black t-shirts, held petrol bottles and stood united in protest. One of them stated on camera, “We gave up our weapons. We helped during the floods like we were supposed to. Now you’re arresting us. We’ll end our lives.”
Widespread Unrest After Arrest
Following Singh’s detention by security forces, violent protests broke out across several parts of Imphal. Protesters blocked roads with burning tyres, prompting authorities to suspend internet services for five days across five valley districts.
Singh, previously a head constable in the state police commando unit, is the primary accused in a February 2024 incident involving an attack on the home of Additional Superintendent of Police Moirangthem Amit and a subsequent kidnapping. He had been suspended for dereliction of duty shortly after the incident.

Violence Spreads Across Districts
In response to the unrest, officials imposed a curfew in Bishnupur district and issued prohibitory orders in Imphal East, Imphal West, Thoubal, and Kakching. As security forces attempted to quell the growing agitation, chaos erupted.
Protesters reportedly Meitei youth linked to Arambai Tenggol, a group previously accused of violence during ethnic clashes with Kuki communities, shouted slogans demanding Singh’s release. The streets of Imphal echoed with around 50 rounds of gunfire during the night.
Mob Torches Vehicles, Damages Surveillance
In the peak of violence, angry mobs set fire to two buses and a security forces’ jeep. They also damaged several CCTV cameras at major intersections, making it difficult for authorities to monitor the situation.
The state’s administration remains on high alert as the unrest simmers, with authorities working to prevent further escalation.
