Watch: Singapore’s Envoy To India Cooks Biryani For The First Time On World Biryani Day

Singapore’s High Commissioner to India, Simon Wong, marked World Biryani Day with a special gesture, sharing his debut attempt at cooking the celebrated dish on X. Alongside images of his culinary endeavor, he engaged his audience, asking them to weigh in on which Indian state they believe boasts the best biryani.

“Greetings India! Happy World Biryani Day! My first try at making biryani. Let me know which state serves the best biryani, and I’ll plan a visit. Bon appétit. HC Wong,” he expressed in his post.

In a video showcasing his cooking process, Wong is seen unveiling the aromatic dish, remarking, “smelling great.” As he prepares the biryani, he advises, “Ok, what you need to do is give it a good stir… so that all the ingredients are meshed up nicely together. I think this is doing good.” Concluding the video, he reflects, “Success, I suppose in the first attempt,” smiling at the camera and bidding farewell with, “Enjoy and thank you.” Alongside, he shared snapshots of the cooked items.

The post has garnered over 12,000 views and nearly 800 likes since its upload, sparking a variety of reactions from X users.

Commenting on the post, one user praised, “Super stuff, his excellency,” while another marveled, “Wow, all that for one person!” Another chimed in enthusiastically, “Wow, that looks amazing! All biryanis are delicious, and I can recommend Avadh dum biryani.” Reflecting on Wong’s culinary journey, another user teased, “I think you are falling in love with Indian cuisine.”

Some X users light-heartedly joked about Wong’s query on the best biryani state, with one quipping, “Which state? Never ask this question! This can even start a war? Lol.”

Simon Wong has served as Singapore’s High Commissioner to the Republic of India since 2020. Prior to this role, he held the position of Singapore’s Trade Representative to Taiwan from July 2015 to January 2020. He holds a Bachelor of Social Science in Sociology (Honours) from the National University of Singapore and a Master of Arts in East Asian Studies from Cornell University, earned in 1990 and 1998 respectively.
